Lavenant, M; Paquotte, Philippe.
Two major constraints to aquaculture have raised in most countries : the little availability of convenient sites because of the competition for the use of the coastline and the progressive implementation of regulations to reduce the impact of the farms on the environment. The technique of recirculation, widely used for hatcheries, has been developed to answer these constraints and to get free of the natural variations in order to regulate the résults. The ongrowing experimental facilities have proved good enough results to make it possible to conceive industrial projects for sea-bass and turbot. In first approach, the production costs of these systems are similar to traditional techniques but expected productivity gains due to an increase of zootechnical...

Radonic, M..
Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have...

Fraysse, C.; Petraroia, A..
Mariculture in Argentina has expanded over the last years. Flounders of the Paralichtydae family are a very important fishery resource due to their abundance, meat quality, and high market price. The first mass production of juveniles of Paralichthys orbignyanus in captivity was successfully performed in 2002 at the Estación Experimental de Maricultura (EEM), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata. Moreover, it has got potential as a species for cultivation, due to its behaviour in captivity, good growth, survival and feed conversion rates. In this study, the parameters that affect this flounder cultivation under controlled conditions and in closed recirculating seawater system, are presented. Temperature, pH, and...

Cultivation of native seaweed Gracilaria domingensis (Rhodophyta) in Southern Brazil BABT
Salles,José Pedrassoli; Scherner,Fernando; Yoshimura,Cristalina Yoshie; Fanganiello,Maurício; Bouzon,Zenilda Laurita; Horta,Paulo Antunes.
The aim of this work was to study the cultivation of Gracilaria domingensis in a mussel farming urbanized area in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Relative growth rate was the parameter used to evaluate the cuttings attachment methods on the cultivation rope, cuttings density, cultivation period and cystocarpic versus unfertile thalli performance. The cultivation was feasible only when protected by net cages due to herbivory. The tie-tie attachment method presented the best results. No differences were observed when comparing the cuttings densities and reproductive phase. Future studies should evaluate the cost-effectiveness of producing the species in net cages and its potential as biofilter.

Aristizabal, E.O..
Spontaneous spawning of red porgy was achieved in captivity by using photoperiod and temperature control systems along the year. During a four-month reproduction period females released in average about 0.2 times their own body weight in oocytes with an energy content of 5.71 J mg-1 wet weight. A total of 28.8 x 106 eggs and approximately 200 g of viable eggs (wet weight) per female kg were obtained. The eggs and larvae quality in terms of hatching and larval survival rates experienced a significant variation during the spawning season ranging between 0%-92% and 0.3%-33.2% respectively. Comments in reference to the probable causes of these variations and the need of carrying on with this line of research are presented.

Leborgne, Y.
SATMAR has developed techniques and methods allowing a production of over 100 million spat per year at a size from 2 to 10 millimetres. Among the 13 species concerned by this production, 3 of major importance are the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis and the Japanese little neck clam, Ruditapes philippinarum . The hatchery production could easily be doubled if the market would increase. Current research tend to increase the quality of the products by means of genetics and to lower the costs by improving the nursery phase.

Jacq, E; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois; Corre, S; Daniel, J; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Cochard, Jean-claude; Fera, P.
Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. Taxonomic screening showed no differences among the two waters neither at the beginning nor at the end of the rearings. However, depending on the water (stored or not) differences were identified for bacterial physiology and...

Bruni, V; Crisafi, E; Maugeri, T; Zaccone, R.
110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify.
